German expressionism/Film Noir in video games

Video Games are like movies in which you interact and play out the story due to this conventions normally seen in movies can also appear in Video Games.
An example of German expressionism in a Video Game is in the Arkham series of games, following up on the now normal viewpoint that Batman games are very dark themed.
Arkham Asylum is the first in the trilogy and the rest of the games follow this pattern, albeit every game seems to get darker and darker, ultimately being so dark that we are not even sure that the Batman is "Human" any more.
                                                                                 

This is a screen capture of one of the take-downs in game, the camera is at a odd angle and the majority of the map is straight or jagged which is a convention of German expressionism. It is also easy to spot that everything is shrouded in shadow and darkness giving the game a gloomy effect.
Arkham asylums entrance pictured incorporates a dark knight and rainfall which give it a eerie and dark effect. The angle of the shot is also jagged and angular.

Almost all of the terrain in these games is uneven and straight with the buildings and the flooring areas being arranged in a jagged order.







This image from the ending cut scene of Batman Arkham knight is the "fear toxin" (A toxin which uses the greatest fear of the subject against them) effecting Scarecrow the main villain of the game. It is odd in the way that it portrays Batman as scarecrows most feared thing, this is very odd in that throughout the game Scarecrow uses Batman s fears against him yet he fears Batman above all else. which portrays that this "Hero" has a dark side to him one which even the literal being of fear is scared of. The high contrast lighting causes the scene to become blurred and disorientating with the fiendish glare of the figure in the background. The scene is also angular with the demonic Batsy being positioned in one corner of the street giving it a disorientating effect.











A example of Film noir being used in Video games is the 2010 game Limbo which basically involved you playing as a young boy traversing throughout a dangerous and eerie landscape

 From these screenshots it is very clear that the game portrays a sense of disorientation as every part of the terrain is one single colour and that the game involves only a handful of colours.
The limited amount of room around the player gives it a enclosed and claustrophobic effect and this is portrayed throughout the entirety of the game.
Throughout the game you as a player will encounter multiple hazards which are demoniacally twisted and distorted to make it seem horrifying such as the spider pictured.  The story of the game is a typical story of a false hope you are a unknown child, who tries to find his lost sister and has a bad outcome, after running from demonic and jumping over treacherous paths it ends abruptly and nothing is explained in the final moments of the game. You go through hell to have nothing gained at the very end.
