Comparing the endings of The Third Man and Se7en

Both films are very dark in their stories be it selling drugs which cause birth defects to simple murdering people to act out the seven sins. Both Films end on a negative note, at each ending there is some sort of death,

Se7en is clever in its ending in which the murderer takes advance over the Judgement of the Policemen, he turns himself in purposely in order to take out these final crimes. David who has been seen throughout the film as a family man who is seen with his wife in many scenes is the center of this final act of godly murdering? Mr Doe or murderer flips everything he is seen for on its head he is Envy. He is envious of Davids wife and kills her, taking her head and putting it into the infamous box. As his final act he turns David into Wrath. David now deeply saddened and very angry at the situation shoots Doe killing him. This brings the movie story to an end, the sins have all been extinguished yet Wrath still remains, this movie does not have a good ending.

The Third Man has a fairly good ending yet doesn't come close to being clever. Harry after being cornered and trapped in the sewers is hunted down. Harry in anger shoots a policeman killing him, this is then followed up by Holly shooting Harry in what looks like to be his leg or arm but this is never shown, we can only assume he is badly wounded. He then drags his dying body up to the drainage plate and tries to lift it up before giving up and collapsing to the cold hard stairs. Holly then shoots him and ends the chaos caused by Harry,.
This movie has a happy ending, the main bad guy is dead.

Both movies have a dark ending in which someone dies albeit in Se7en the good guy turns into a deadly sin while in The Third Man the main character kills his best friend. Se7ens ending is more clever than TTM but at the same time TTM ends on a positive note the city is free from this criminal mastermind.

In conclusion both endings are very well laid out and in dark movie style someone dies. Both endings incorporate some sort of emotional decision, Se7en does this by using what the murderer wants against them and in the end he wins while in TTM Holly has to kill his best friend these endings both endings are drawn to a close by a single decision.
